As we step into a new year, it’s tempting to look back, holding onto past disappointments, mistakes, or even comforts that no longer serve us. But the story of Lot’s wife in Genesis reminds us of the importance of looking forward with faith.

When God gave Lot and his family the clear instruction, “Do not look back” (Genesis 19:17), it was a call to trust His plan and move ahead. Yet, Lot’s wife couldn’t resist turning back, clinging to the life she was leaving behind. Her hesitation cost her dearly, as she was turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).

This story challenges us to trust God’s plan and move forward without regret or fear. By holding onto the past, we risk missing the blessings and purpose He has prepared for us. Instead, we’re called to press on with faith, trusting that He is leading us toward something better.

As Paul writes in Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Practical Steps to Look Forward with Faith

  1. Surrender the Past to God:

Take a moment to reflect on what you’re holding onto—disappointments, regrets, or even comforts—and release them to God in prayer. Trust Him to handle what you cannot change.

  2. Set Faith-Focused Goals:

Write down one or two goals for this year that align with God’s purpose for your life. Keep them simple, actionable, and prayerfully consider how He is leading you.

  3. Cultivate a Forward-Focused Mindset:

When tempted to dwell on the past, redirect your thoughts to Scripture that reminds you of God’s promises, such as Isaiah 43:18-19: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”

  4. Take One Step at a Time:

Trusting God’s plan doesn’t mean having it all figured out. Take one step of obedience today—whether it’s starting a new habit, forgiving someone, or embracing an opportunity He’s placed in front of you.

This year, let’s commit to looking ahead with confidence, letting go of what holds us back, and embracing the new opportunities God is placing before us. He has promised to walk with us every step of the way, guiding us toward His perfect plan.

Here’s to a year of faith, purpose, and forward momentum!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
