Take Captive Every Thought—Here’s How

Read time 3 minutes

Our thoughts shape our lives. The way we think influences our emotions, choices, and even our faith. What we dwell on can either draw us closer to God or pull us away from His truth.

"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." – Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)

The enemy knows this, which is why his attacks often start in the mind. He plants doubts, fears, and lies—convincing us we’re not enough, that we have no purpose, or that God is distant. But the good news is: we are not powerless.

God has given us authority over our thoughts. We don’t have to be ruled by fear, anxiety, or deception. Scripture calls us to take charge:

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." – 2 Corinthians 10:5

Walking in This Truth as a Writer for the Good News
Being a writer for the Good News has been an unconventional path—one that, to some, seems unusual. Along the way, I’ve faced ridicule and doubt about the calling, but that’s exactly why I remain strong in mindset. I’ve learned that when God calls you, the opinions of others cannot define you.

It's not always easy, but renewing my mind daily with God’s Word gives me the strength to stay faithful, even when the path feels lonely.

If you’ve ever felt the weight of doubt or fear, know this: God’s truth is greater than the enemy’s lies. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11).

As someone who has stepped into a calling that wasn’t always understood, I can tell you this: God equips those He calls. And the first battleground is always the mind.

How Do We Take Control of Our Thoughts?

Recognize the Lies
Not every thought we have is from God. The enemy wants us to believe fear, doubt, and negativity because a deceived mind leads to a deceived life. Ask yourself: Does this thought align with God’s truth or the enemy’s deception?

Replace Negativity with Scripture
We combat lies with truth. When thoughts of worry arise, replace them with God’s Word. When fear speaks, declare: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." – 2 Timothy 1:7

When self-doubt creeps in, remember: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." – Philippians 4:13

Guard Your Mind
What we allow into our minds matters. Social media, news, entertainment—everything we consume either feeds faith or fuels fear.

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things." – Philippians 4:8

What we meditate on, we magnify. If we fill our minds with negativity, worry, and doubt, that’s what will grow. But if we fill our minds with truth, faith, and God’s Word, we will see transformation.

Speak Life
Words have power. What we speak reinforces what we believe. Instead of speaking defeat, speak victory. Instead of complaining, declare gratitude. Instead of saying, “I can’t,” say, “With God, all things are possible.”

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." – Proverbs 18:21

A Thought to Reflect On

What thoughts have been holding you back lately? Are there lies, doubts, or fears that have quietly taken root in your mind?

Scripture reminds us: "Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). We don't have to entertain every thought that enters our mind—God has given us the power to reject what isn't from Him and replace it with His truth.

Fill your mind with what is true, noble, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). Let God’s Word shape your thoughts, and peace will follow.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

Breaking Free from Deception

The battle for our minds is real, and sin works subtly to keep us bound. That’s why I wrote Sin the Great Joker—to help believers stay spiritually awake.

If you’ve ever felt weighed down by thoughts that don’t align with God’s truth, this book is for you.
